2010 Farm Show Was One Of Best On Record!
Posted on Jan 29 2010 by Christina
Harrisburg – Nearly half a million visitors experienced the best of Pennsylvania’s agriculture industry at the 2010 Farm Show, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said today, noting that a final tally of parking and sales figures showed increased traffic and food sales.
“The 94th Pennsylvania Farm Show was a huge success,” said Redding. “For eight days we were able to put agriculture front and center for hundreds of thousands of people—or, as many people commented, what was a record crowd. That experience helped them better understand the role the industry plays in our state’s proud past, present and future.
“It was great to see so many visitors come to Harrisburg to enjoy the diversity of Pennsylvania agriculture and this unique event.”
According to the department, the number of vehicles parked at the PennsylvaniaFarmShowComplex & ExpoCenter and its satellite lots this year was the second-highest on record, and represented an increase of nearly 5,000 vehicles as compared to 2009.
The food court, a crowd favorite that features a wide variety of culinary delights, saw sales rise 15 percent over last year. With commodity groups that produce and sell their own products, the food court is regarded as an intersection of the state’s 12.5 million consumers and 63,000 farmers.
The Food Court Shuttle, which takes riders from downtown Harrisburg and other satellite lots to the complex, also recorded an increase in ridership of nearly 17 percent, which helped to bolster sales.
In addition to the more than 400,000 two-legged visitors estimated to have visited the show, the Farm Show hosted 6,000 animals and 10,000 competitive exhibits. This year’s exhibits increased in several areas including entries in the Pennsylvania wine competition and the Family and Consumer Living department.
The FFA exhibit competition—Keeping PA Growing: Open for Business—highlighted Pennsylvania’s robust food sector. Eight high school FFA chapters partnered with food processing companies to design life-sized exhibits to showcase locally produced foods and educate visitors about food production and manufacturing processes.
“The Pennsylvania Farm Show represents a microcosm of Pennsylvania society. We have visitors from across the state with varying connections to the agriculture industry, but we all have one thing in common: we like to eat,” Redding said.
"Thanks to the many producers, volunteers, staff and our partners from PennStateUniversity’s Cooperative Extension and Outreach, we were able to help Farm Show visitors – producers and consumers alike - understand they are a valued part of Pennsylvania agriculture.”

Octorara High School Listed on Newsweek's "America's Top Public Schools"!
Posted on Aug 11 2009 by Christina
'Newsweek magazine ran an article on "America's Top Public HighSchools" in June, only Octorara High School made the list — no other local schools were mentioned.
So how did the little high school in rural Atglen make the cut? Newsweek based its rankings on only two measures: the number of advanced-placement, International Baccalaureate and Cambridge tests given to all students in 2008-09, and the total number of seniors who graduated in June. Schools that administered at least one test per graduating senior made the list. Octorara, which had 1.043 AP tests per senior, was ranked 1,512th of the 1,564 schools on the list. While its ranking was relatively low, Octorara can boast that it's among what Newsweek considers the top 6 percent of public high schools in America.
Octorara teachers and administrators said they're not surprised at the ranking. "We think our top kids can compete at any (college) with anybody," said Adam Udell, who teachers advanced-placement government and politics at Octorara. "We're very proud of our AP program for a small rural school," superintendent Thomas Newcome said. "We're pushing hard for students to take as rich a curriculum as they can."
The school, which graduated 204 seniors in June, has been steadily adding advanced-placement courses over the years. In 2005, it offered five AP courses that enrolled 96 students. This year, Octorara expects to enroll about 270 students in 12 courses, including three new art classes. Science teacher Bill McWatters said Octorara didn't exactly have a strong academic reputation when he came to the school eight years ago. But since then, Newcome has made increasing academic rigor a priority. "Five or six years ago, he came to me and said, 'I'd really like to offer AP biology. What do we need to do to make that happen?' " McWatters said. The administration has been willing to foot the bill to add more challenging courses, which aren't cheap, he said. Adding the AP biology class, for example, cost about $20,000 for curriculum materials and thousands more for teacher training, McWatters said. Once more students started taking AP courses, word began to spread throughout the school, and more pupils became interested, McWatters said."The kids, for the most part, I think they see real opportunity here," he said. "We offer things that other schools our size don't offer, and kids talk about that."
Octorara now offers AP courses in European history, English literature, physics, chemistry, biology and three-dimensional art, among others. Students who complete the courses and score well on AP exams can earn college credits. Octorara also has expanded the number of college-credit courses it offers in partnership with Delaware County Community College. Spanish and business courses were added last year, and students this fall can enroll in college-level philosophy and physics courses, Udell said.
Because of its small size — Octorara enrolls less than 800 pupils — teachers know their students well enough to direct them to courses that are a good fit, McWatters said. "Across the board, for any student we think would benefit, we talk with them and try to put students in an area where they're challenged but not overburdened," he said.
Octorara made the Newsweek list this year after Udell saw the 2008 rankings and submitted documentation to the magazine. Newsweek admits on its Web site its ranking system is much more limited than those used by other media outlets that consider test scores, extracurricular participation, teacher quality and other factors. But the magazine cites a Department of Education study that found the best predictor of student success in college is a challenging high school curriculum.'

Credit union to open in school
Hempfield to be 1st here with branch
Intelligencer Journal - Lancaster New Era
Jul 27, 2009 09:30 EST Landisville, PA
Hempfield High School students who find themselves strapped for cash
will be able to stop at the school's credit union before hitting the
cafeteria this fall.
Hempfield is partnering with Wheatland Federal
Credit Union to open an in-school branch office, where students and
staff members can open accounts, withdraw money, deposit paychecks,
apply for loans and do other banking.
The branch, which
eventually will have a cash machine, also will give students real-world
financial service experience by employing them as tellers.
"It will give kids an authentic learning experience, which I think is great," Hempfield superintendent Brenda Becker said.
Scheduled to open when the school year begins Aug. 31, the branch will be the first of its kind in Lancaster County.
The Hempfield High branch is an extension of Wheatland's existing sponsorship contract with Hempfield School District.
The
credit union is paying the district $20,000 a year for naming rights to
the high school cafeteria, now called Wheatland Federal Credit Union
Cafe.
The branch is not
expected to make money, said Andrea Holloway, the company's marketing
manager, but is designed to educate students about making smart
financial decisions.
"It's about financial education," she said.
"A lot of kids don't know how to balance a checkbook, so if we can get
them started earlier, that will benefit them."
In another
partnership with the district, Wheatland has sponsored "bank days" at
East Petersburg Elementary School for about 10 years, Holloway said.
Students
at the school can open a credit union account, make deposits and learn
about the importance of saving from a Wheatland employee who visits the
school every Tuesday.
At the high school, Wheatland plans to
integrate the new branch into the school's existing business and
finance courses and possibly work with the faculty to develop a new
course on personal finances.
Wheatland staff members also may serve as guest speakers for the school's business classes, Holloway said.
"It's a great idea," principal Will Stout.
"It'll
make banking transactions more convenient for staff and students, and
it will help students develop some money management principles and
learn about checking accounts and savings accounts and things of that
nature."
Wheatland is converting the former school store, located in the commons area near the cafeteria, to serve as the branch office.
The
facility will be open only to district students and staff members and
will have limited hours, operating a few days a week around lunchtime.
Initially,
the branch will be staffed by Wheatland employees. Later in the year,
high school seniors recommended by the faculty will be offered jobs as
tellers.
At all times, Holloway said, a Wheatland staff member will supervise the branch's operation.
Like all employees who handle money, the students will be subject to background checks and must be bonded to work at the branch.
A no-fee automated teller machine is planned for later in the year.

High School Sports Attendance Up In A Down Economy
Posted on Dec 30 2008 by Zak
Lancaster, PA - During these trying economic times, most major sports leagues and properties are feeling the crunch. High school athletics however has remained strong. In fact, according to a comprehensive national survey conducted with Scarborough Research, high school sports gained in on-site attendance during a time period where nearly every other major sports property, league or affiliation saw a drop off. The survey compared two annual time periods (8/06-3/07 compared to 8/07-3/08) and included 70 marketplaces across the United States with more than 90,000 respondents in each time period.
In each survey, respondents answered the following question: "Events you attended in the past 12 months?" An astounding 21% of adults cited high school sports, which was a 4.4% increase vs. the same time period the year before. The survey showed declines in all of the following: college football, college basketball, NBA, MLS, NFL, NASCAR, and the PGA. While MLB remained steady. Click here for a look at survey results.
